License
Users have the option to provide a license for their privately submitted data. However, the license is mandatory for making the data public. In step-3 of the submission, the user can see that the license field in the project is marked with red as it is required for publishing. By clicking Edit
, they can provide one. Alternatively, after submission, the user can provide a license to the project from View details or Edit button found next to the license field.
Licensing propagates from parent objects to their children, meaning that licensing a project will reflect in its studies and datasets. However, the user can selectively give the studies different licenses, which propagate again to the datasets. At the dataset level, the user cannot provide licenses, which means that the dataset will always inherit its parent study license. Licensing a study can be done from the View details or Edit button found next to the license field in the About
tab of the sample view. The user can edit the licenses as long as the project is private.
Licenses in nmrXiv
Data producers might have different wishes on how their shared data can be used in the sense of modifications, resharing, citing, etc. Thus, nmrXiv aims at using as many relevant licenses as possible, and providing the user with the required knowledge to pick the right license. Here we provide a list of all licenses available in nmrXiv. Please reach out to us if you believe any relevant license is missing.
Our recommendations
As we promote open data, we encourage you to use Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0), which allows the users to modify and share your material while crediting you for it.
Creative Commons
Creative Commons licenses give everyone from individual creators to large institutions a standardized way to grant the public permission to use their creative work under copyright law. There are different license types, listed from most to least permissive here:
CC0 CC0 (aka CC Zero) is a public dedication tool, which allows creators to give up their copyright and put their works into the worldwide public domain. CC0 allows reusers to distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon the material in any medium or format, with no conditions.
CC BY This license allows reusers to distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon the material in any medium or format, so long as attribution is given to the creator. The license allows for commercial use.
In nmrXiv, version 4 (Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0)) can be used.
CC BY-SA This license allows reusers to distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon the material in any medium or format, so long as attribution is given to the creator. The license allows for commercial use. If you remix, adapt, or build upon the material, you must license the modified material under identical terms.
In nmrXiv, version 4 (Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0)) can be used.
CC BY-NC This license allows reusers to distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon the material in any medium or format for noncommercial purposes only, and only so long as attribution is given to the creator.
In nmrXiv, version 4 (Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC 4.0)) can be used.
